Mithila, Bihar and the Mithila Makhana GI description answer different geographical questions. Mithila is used for a cultural region; Bihar is an administrative state. A research location tells you where observations were made, while a GI document describes the place associated with a named product. Keep the source and the kind of place beside the name.
Five place layers to keep separate
The sources below were checked on 8 October 2026. This table explains their different purposes; it does not draw a new boundary around Mithila.
| Layer | Source-labelled example | What the example establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Cultural region | Madhubani's district administration describes Mithila art across India and Nepal. Official district account. | A cultural use of “Mithila”; not a surveyed perimeter. |
| Administrative state | Bihar's administrative structure includes divisions and districts. Purnea divisional office. | The level to retain when reading a state-level statement. |
| Division and district | Darbhanga Division comprises Darbhanga, Madhubani and Samastipur districts. Divisional commissioner. | A division and its constituent districts are different units. |
| Study location | Darbhanga and Madhubani: Singh and colleagues' 2018 paper; fieldwork in 2017. IJEE, methods p.77. | The setting of that research, not a boundary for the food category. |
| GI geographical description | The Mithila Makhana entry in GI Journal 153. Application 696, journal pp.9 and 14. | A product-specific document to read alongside its date and specification. |
Does Mithila mean the same thing as Bihar?
No. The district account's description of Mithila art includes India and Nepal, whereas the administrative sources describe units within Bihar. Darbhanga's divisional website also places its division within the wider Mithila cultural context. These statements help orient the reader; they do not supply one definitive cultural polygon. Madhubani's cultural account; Darbhanga's divisional account.
That distinction matters when a makhana story moves between regional heritage and a government statistic. Do not silently change “Bihar” into “Mithila”, or turn a district observation into a statement about an entire cultural region. For the historical story itself, read makhana's Mithila connection.
What does the GI document actually say?
The registry's area summary says Bihar. The underlying journal is more specific: section G on page 9 of GI Journal 153, dated 13 April 2022, describes production across 21 of the state's 38 districts, mostly in the north. Application 696: area field and Document Details → journal.
Its list, retaining the journal's names, is: Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, Purvi Champaran, Paschim Champaran, Vaishali, Gopalganj, Siwan, Chapra, Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Saharsa, Supaul, Madhepura, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnea and Katihar.
Page 14 contains the accompanying agro-climatic and growing-area maps. Read them with section G; this guide neither redraws them nor treats them as a map of cultural Mithila. A place appearing in the description also does not, by itself, establish a particular pack's qualification. Our GI-record guide explains the separate record and entity checks.
Three examples of careful interpretation
- A page says “Darbhanga”. Identify whether it means the city, district or division. The divisional office names Darbhanga city as its headquarters, while listing the wider division's districts separately. Add the unit to your note before comparing it with another source. Official division structure.
- A paper studies two districts. Preserve that study setting when describing its results. A researcher's choice of locations does not establish that cultivation occurs only there, or that the same observation applies everywhere else.
- A seller uses a regional name. Ask what the name describes: cultural context, growing location, processing address or a GI-related claim. Then request evidence for that specific statement. A place name alone does not connect all those stages.
A compact reading note needs four entries: place name, kind of place, source/date, and claim supported. For an illustration or map, add what its legend actually shows. If the source does not define a boundary, record that limit rather than drawing one from memory.
This is category geography, not evidence of Namaste Makhana's sourcing or GI authorisation. To distinguish the people and operations behind a packet, continue with the supply-chain roles guide.
