Read a flavoured makhana ingredient list in two passes: first follow the main entries, then examine any ingredients grouped inside brackets. Keep those levels separate in your notes. Use the actual packet's text; a flavour name, photograph or another brand's recipe cannot fill a missing line.

Start with the right piece of text

Write the descriptive food name and flavour on one line, then copy the text headed “Ingredients” onto another. This avoids treating a short front-of-pack phrase as a complete list. If a photograph cuts off the ingredient panel, record “incomplete image” instead of guessing its ending.

ICMR-NIN's Guideline 17 explains that ingredients appear in descending quantity order, with the largest first. It also recommends reading ingredient and nutrition information together. The list answers a different question from the numbers in the nutrition panel. ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024, pages 106 and 110.

Keep the main list and seasoning brackets separate

FSSAI's ordering rule uses weight or volume at manufacture. A compound ingredient's bracketed components follow their own descending proportions at that compound's manufacture. Alternatively, its components may appear individually in the final list; declaration exceptions also exist. Original FSSAI regulations, 5(2)(b) and 5(2)(e), pages 30–31; compendium, pages 5 and 8.

A fictional line, read in two passes

Invented teaching example only. This is not a Namaste Makhana ingredient list, a recipe, or an approved label.

Ingredients: popped makhana, seasoning (rice flour, salt, cumin), sunflower oil.

How to separate this invented line
PassText to keep togetherReading
Main entriesPopped makhana → seasoning → sunflower oilThree entries; seasoning remains a group.
Inside seasoningRice flour → salt → cuminThe order within that group.

In this example, salt's position inside seasoning cannot establish whether there is more salt than sunflower oil in the whole food. The line supplies no exact percentages. Removing the brackets would lose information. Conversely, a real list without brackets does not establish that every ingredient is a single substance.

A blank worksheet for your own packet

Copy this worksheet into a note. For a comparison, complete it once per packet before writing a conclusion. Keep an unanswered question visible rather than turning it into a product fact.

Record the text before interpreting it
FieldYour entryUseful prompt
Packet identity________Food name, flavour, pack size and date you checked.
Evidence saved________Your packet photograph or the seller's complete label image.
Exact ingredient text________Preserve punctuation, percentages and unfamiliar terms.
Main entries________Number them without breaking apart bracketed groups.
Grouped components________Copy each group on its own line.
Unresolved question________Which word or missing detail needs clarification?

A focused seller question might be: “For this flavour and pack size, could you share a readable image of the complete ingredient panel and explain the term I have marked?” Save the response beside the image so that your comparison remains traceable.

Know where this worksheet stops

This exercise does not assess allergy suitability, approve a label or reconstruct a manufacturer's recipe. For nutritional amounts, use the actual panel with our portion calculator. For the limits of category-wide nutrition claims, read the nutrition evidence guide. For weight, price and delivery comparisons, use how to choose makhana.

Namaste Makhana's approved ingredient panels have not yet been published. The invented line above must not be used to describe any of our flavours. Our launch information records the current product-information boundary.
